Healthy relationships, online and offline

Goals

  • Create an environment in which students feel comfortable discussing the factors that shape relationships as healthy or unhealthy
  • Provide opportunities for students to think critically and practice decision-making to promote all forms of healthy relationships
  • Identify and distinguish between qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Demonstrate the ability to reason critically in making decisions about relationships
  • Understand and distinguish between sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression and romantic attraction

Brief description of the issue

In recent years, Quebec has seen significant social polarisation in secondary schools (Miconi, 2023), a resurgence of misogynistic and masculinist discourse, particularly online (Clermont-Dion, 2025; Radio-Canada, 2023), and a rise in young people’s intolerance towards LGBTQ+ individuals (GRIS-Montréal, 2025). This context can give way to unhealthy relationships between students, both online and offline.

In this activity, students will learn about factors that contribute to healthy relationships as well as specific elements of online interactions. This activity is aimed at grade 7.
