Goals
Deconstruct gender stereotypes in the classroom ;
Introduce the notion of stereotypes with younger students.
Brief description of the issue
A strong endorsement of gender stereotypes is associated with higher school dropout rates, for boys as well as for girls. We learn those stereotypes from a very young age, therefore they have to be broken down even at the elementary level if we want to give students all the chances they need to succeed in school.
The Open University has put together a set of four lesson plans you can use in your classroom to introduce your students to the notion of gender stereotypes and start them to think critically about what is expected from them because they are a boy or a girl.
