Checklist for an inclusive dress code

Brief description of the issue

Fashion varies throughout the ages, as does what is considered “acceptable” to wear or not to wear. One thing that does not change is the fact that clothing is differentiated according to gender, and that society’s expectations of what men and women, girls and boys can wear are quite strict. Dress codes vary from one school to another, and are sometimes rooted in gender stereotypes that can have long-term impacts on students’ identity and self-esteem, particularly for girls.

To help school teams facilitate a collective discussion about their institution’s dress code, the Table de concertation féministe · Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine has created a checklist of the key principles that should underpin an inclusive dress code. It is available in the documents section below.
